Battery Lasts Forever

I was a little concerned about battery life with my new digital camera. I've heard horror stories about people hiking out to a remote locations only to have their batteries run out and no way to photography what they had come to see. That won't be a problem for me. I've been getting around 2000 photos per charge. So with an extra battery, I'm over 4000 photos away from being up the proverbial creek.

More D-50 features

Another feature I like about the Nikon D-50 is the fast download speed with its USB 2.0 port. Using the Nikon photo software, I can download my photos and delete them off the camera in just a few minutes. And when I purchased the 1GB memory chip, I thought I was over-estimating the number of photos I would ever take in one outing. But that has not been the case. The extra memory lets me shoot rapid fire photos at high resolution in case I get one that I want to print as an 8 X 10 or larger.

Football Action

This morning my nephew had a football game and I was able to get some shots with my D-50. Last week I noticed that my 1A skylight filter produced a very noticable haze on the image when I was pointing toward the sun. My other lens had a 1B filter and it appeared fine. So today I made sure I had my back to the sun. From what I've read about skylight filters, I wasn't aware there was really much difference but I guess there is.

Nikon D-50

After using my trusty Cannon AE-1 for over 15 years, I finally upgraded to a digital SLR. The Nikon D-50 has proved to be a great choice. It's small, yet has the features that allow you to control the exposure in ways smaller, point and shoot cameras cannot. One example is the automatic ISO feature where you can set the minimum shutter speed at say 1/60 and the camera will automatically raise the ISO to allow for proper exposure.

I purchased the camera at 17th Street Photo out of New York. They called me on the phone a few minutes after I ordered it online to verify that my credit card wasn't being used by someone else. I got the 2 lens kit that includes an 18 to 55 mm and 55-200 mm lens. It's a great combination for all types of photography. With the 1 GB SD memory card, I can take tons of photos in sequence. That alone has allowed me to get shots I wouldn't have gotten with my AE-1.
